The best breakfast sandwich has your favorite bread, protein, egg, and cheese. Follow this method to prep your favorites for the whole week and skip the drive-thru!

I used to think breakfast sandwiches were only something you could order at a restaurant or fast-food joint. I mean, who has time to cook and assemble ingredients when you’re trying to make lunches, wrangle kids, and get everyone out the door on time without spilling coffee on your clean shirt?
And then it dawned on me…you can meal prep breakfast sandwiches AHEAD of time!
Now breakfast sandwiches are one of our favorite options for the morning!
THE BEST BREAKFAST SANDWICH RECIPES
Not only are make ahead breakfast sandwiches lifesavers for busy weekday mornings, but they’re also:
- Easy to batch cook. In fact, it’s almost easier to make several breakfast sandwiches at once than to just make one or two!
- Freezer friendly. Breakfast sandwiches are easy to freeze, so you can grab them on those busy mornings!
- The ultimate customizable food. You can choose the protein, the bread, and whether or not you want cheese.
- Much healthier for you than typical fast-food places. Less sodium, fewer preservatives, and still plenty of flavor!
- And they’re cheap! Even with the increases in price, eggs are still a fairly inexpensive protein option, and you can pair them with whatever breakfast meat you find marked down!
- Delicious. The most important factor – they taste really good!

SANDWICH FOR BREAKFAST RECIPE INGREDIENTS
The ingredients for a bacon egg and cheese sandwich are just that – bacon, egg, and cheese! That’s a classic combination, but there’s no limit to the creativity that can go into a breakfast sandwich.
When making a sandwich for breakfast recipe, choose one (or more!) item from each category:
Protein:
- Bacon
- Breakfast Sausage
- Canadian Bacon
- Turkey Bacon
- Ham
- Leftover grilled chicken or steak is tasty too!
Egg:
- Scrambled Eggs
- Fried Eggs
These two are the best options, and whole eggs taste best (in my opinion). You can boost the protein by adding egg whites, or just use only egg whites if you prefer. Keep reading for how to cook an egg using a round mold so it stays in your sandwich!
Cheese: Technically, cheese is optional, but it really adds a savory bite to the sandwich.
- Mild cheeses like mild cheddar cheese, Monterey jack, and Colby jack are best for breakfast sandwiches.
- Or even go fancy with goat cheese, feta cheese, or cream cheese!
- American cheese is super melty, but also highly processed.
Bread: I went with English Muffins because that’s what I had, but the options are endless. Butter the toasted bread before assembling the sandwich if you’d like.
- Croissants
- Bagels
- Biscuits
- Rolls
- Toasted Sourdough Bread
- Tortillas
- An egg white wrap (for the low-carb folks)
Bonus ingredients: These work better for fresh sandwiches vs. make ahead breakfast sandwiches, but they’re definitely yummy if you want to add them!
- Mashed Avocado or Guacamole
- Mayonnaise
- Hot Sauce
- Roasted Red Peppers
- A small handful of spinach or arugula
- Sautéed onions and mushrooms
- Tomato slice
- Red onions or other fresh vegetables

EGGS FOR BREAKFAST EGG SANDWICHES
I love scrambled eggs and spent quite a long time perfecting a recipe for the Best Scrambled Eggs ever. However, a scoop of scrambled eggs tends to fall out of the sandwich, making it a messy meal.
I recommend either cooking your large eggs over easy OR using a mold to contain your scrambled eggs so that they stay inside your sandwich. Keep reading to see how to cook both types of eggs.
You can also make eggs on a baking sheet pan or in a muffin tin if you’re feeding a crowd or cooking in bulk.
Or try scrambling a dozen eggs and cooking them in a 13×9 pan. Bake at 375F for about 22 minutes. You can then slice the scrambled eggs into squares perfect for adding to breakfast sandwiches. (This is a perfect chance to add diced onions and peppers if you like the flavor!)
Poach the eggs or make fried eggs or sunny side up. Or make your favorite omelet. Go with your gut!

HOW TO MAKE EGGS FOR BREAKFAST SANDWICHES
Step 1: Preheat a nonstick griddle or skillet over medium heat. Use cooking spray to coat the nonstick skillet and both sides of a mason jar lid ring (the ring only). I used a wide-mouth ring. Set aside.
Step 2: Place the ring on the nonstick skillet (I prefer lip side down) and either crack the egg into the ring or pour the scrambled eggs into the ring. Use a pair of tongs to push the ring down, keeping the ring touching the skillet for 10-15 seconds so the eggs don’t sneak out from underneath the mold.

Step 3: Season with salt and pepper, then cook the egg for about 2 minutes, or until the egg starts to cook around the edges. If bubbles appear in the eggs as they cook, pop them with a fork. This ensures the egg cooks through in the center.

Step 4: Once you see the egg cooked around the edges, use a pancake flipper to scoop the entire egg and mold and flip it over. Continue to cook for about 1 minute.

Step 5: Remove the egg to a cutting board, carefully remove the ring, and assemble your breakfast egg sandwiches.

HOW TO MAKE A BREAKFAST SANDWICH
You don’t need a special contraption like a breakfast sandwich maker to make a yummy breakfast sandwich! It’s so simple to do at home!
Step 1: Prepare your ingredients. You’ll want to have everything ready to go before you start. This means toasting your bread, smearing avocado or butter or mayo, unwrapping and slicing cheese, cooking the eggs, cooking the meat, etc. Once your eggs are done, you want to be ready to assemble the breakfast egg sandwiches.
Step 2: Assemble the sandwiches. Layer the bread, meat, egg, cheese, and any bonus ingredients, followed by the top layer of the bread.
Enjoy right away or wrap for the freezer.

FREEZER BREAKFAST SANDWICHES
Whatever combination you choose, you can freeze breakfast sandwich recipes! Skip the bonus ingredients section, as most of those typically don’t freeze well.
- Follow the recipe as written and let the sandwich cool for a couple of minutes.
- Wrap the sandwich with aluminum foil, ensuring there is no exposed sandwich.
- Place the wrapped sandwiches in an airtight freezer-safe bag and freeze.
To thaw, remove one of your wrapped freezer breakfast sandwiches and place it in a preheated oven, toaster oven, or air fryer until it’s warmed through.
Warming in the microwave is not ideal (you can end up with a soggy texture or cold spots), but can be done in a pinch. Be sure to remove the aluminum foil before using the microwave.
IDEAS FOR BREAKFAST SANDWICHES
Waffle Sandwich
Use your favorite waffle instead of a bagel or English muffin. Blender Oatmeal Waffles are our go-to waffle recipe, but Sourdough Waffles or even Chocolate Waffles would be fun!
Pancake sandwiches are a thing, too, so don’t rule out that option either!
Egg and Bacon Roll
Use up leftover Dinner Rolls for a delicious egg and bacon roll. We like Homemade Hamburger Rolls, but Kaiser rolls or bolillo rolls are good too. Breakfast sliders are fun!
Healthy Breakfast Sandwich
Turkey bacon, egg whites, and arugula make a delicious yet healthy breakfast sandwich. Choose whole wheat over white for your bread to increase the fiber.
English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich Recipe
One of my favorite variations, the English muffin breakfast sandwich, uses English Muffins for the bread. You can get these in white, whole wheat, whole grain, and even gluten-free. (This is what you get when you order an Egg McMuffin, just healthier!)
Hashbrown Eggwich
Tuck crispy hashbrowns or potatoes inside your breakfast sandwich… because you can.
Sausage Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich
Add a Breakfast Sausage patty on top of the egg in your breakfast sandwich. This is by far one of our favorite breakfast sandwich combos!
More Ideas for Breakfast Sandwiches
Use these ideas for breakfast sandwiches as a starting point. I don’t think I can stress this enough – DO WHAT YOU WANT. The ultimate breakfast sandwich is a catch-all of catch-alls when it comes to flavor and using things you have on hand.
Got a leftover roasted pepper in the fridge from Christmas? Goat cheese from that party? Salami from the charcuterie board? You guys. Just go for it. You can’t go wrong!

MACRO-FRIENDLY BREAKFAST SANDWICHES
Breakfast sandwiches naturally include all 3 of your main macros: protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
Depending on your goals for breakfast, you can adjust your breakfast sandwich to fit the macros you need.
Protein. You’ll get protein from the breakfast meat, eggs, and cheese. Increase the protein by using both bacon and sausage (or a couple of your favorite breakfast meats) and adding egg whites to your scrambled egg mixture.
Fat. Most of the breakfast sandwich components have at least some fat: whole eggs, cheese, and fattier meats like bacon or sausage. You’ll also add fat with condiments like butter or mayo. To lower the fat, use skim mozzarella cheese (or skip the cheese), egg whites, and a leaner meat like turkey bacon.
Carbs. The carbs in breakfast sandwich recipes show up in the bread, so choose a lower-carb option like an egg white wrap or a toasted sandwich thin if you want a low carb breakfast sandwich.
Whichever breakfast sandwich combination you choose, serve it with a side of fresh produce to fill out your plate.
