Fall is finally beginning to set in here in Texas, and the cooler morning breezes have me in the mood for pumpkin everything…
It’s a good thing, too, because Thanksgiving is next week!
Every year at this time, I find myself trying to slow down the holiday season so we can savor every part of it. I add special holiday touches to even the smallest things, and this DIY Pumpkin Spice Coffee Blend is the perfect example!
This has got to be one of the easiest holiday “recipes” ever. In fact, it’s really more of a “method” than a recipe. You just add two simple pantry staples to your basic pot of coffee and, in minutes, you’ve transformed it into the perfect holiday coffee!
It’s great on a chilly fall morning, but would also make a great dessert coffee to go with a slice of pumpkin pie after Thanksgiving dinner!
It doesn’t have the same in-your-face type of flavor you find in flavored coffees from the grocery store – this is more subtle. More refined. More….real.
I discovered it last year at when a waiter at our favorite local steak house told us they added cinnamon sticks and brown sugar to their brewed coffee. I ordered some and loved the delicate sweetness and spice so much that I came home and made my own Easy DIY Christmas Blend Coffee.
DIY Pumpkin Spice Coffee Blend
In addition to how crazy-easy this recipe is, it’s also healthier than flavored coffees you buy in the store.
Did you know that a single blend of commercially flavored coffee could have as many as 80 different chemicals added to it? Some of them are probably benign, but there are no long term human studies to prove it.
I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t even make sense to me to buy a separate type of coffee with 80 different chemicals in it when a few natural spices that God himself created are available, affordable, and – in my opinion – taste much better!
I’m sure many of you feel the same way. And maybe you’ve noticed, as I have, that the fewer processed and chemically laden foods I eat, the more I dislike the tastes and smells of the fake stuff.
I used to love walking by those bins of flavored coffees at the grocery store and now it almost makes me nauseous!
- Coffee grounds for 12 cups of coffee
- 1 tsp homemade pumpkin pie spice
- 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup (or brown sugar)
- Place coffee grounds in filter basket, then sprinkle pumpkin pie spice on top.
- Fill coffee maker with water, then pour maple syrup into the bottom of the empty carafe.
- Seat the carafe in the coffee maker and brew as you normally would.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice: $0.03
- Maple Syrup: $0.47
So it only costs 50 cents to transform an entire pot of joe into delicious pumpkin spice coffee for the holidays!
That price goes down dramatically to about 10 cents per pot if you substitute brown sugar for the maple syrup!
That leaves a little extra room in the budget to whip up a batch of Tiffany’s homemade pumpkin pie spiced coffee creamer to add to it! I bet her homemade vanilla bean coffee creamer would taste great as well!
In case you’re looking for holiday treats to accompany your coffee, these are some of my favorites:
- Homemade Biscotti (the cranberry orange is especially good!)
- Cranberry Orange Scones
- Overnight Kefir Coffeecake (plain is really good, but the cinnamon apple version is AMAZING!)
- Homemade Biscuits with Homemade Pumpkin Butter
- Soft Ginger Cookies
- Pumpkin Fudge
What special touches do you add to help savor your holidays?
