Easy recipe for the best Italian seasoning blend. Cheaper than McCormick brand, perfect for using in recipes like chicken, spaghetti & meatballs, and more!
Do you ever get halfway through a recipe and realize you don’t have a critical ingredient?
I’ve done that so many times, and oddly enough, it’s usually something simple I don’t have, like Italian seasoning!
I certainly don’t want to run out to the grocery store for one thing, so instead, I’ve come up with my own homemade Italian seasoning that tastes just as good as store-bought, but can be made with the spices I already have at home!
Homemade Italian Seasoning Recipe
I already mentioned not wanting to run out to the store to buy just this one spice blend, but here are other reasons why you should consider making this homemade Italian seasoning recipe too:
- Super easy to make – measure & shake!
- Ready in 2 minutes, literally!
- Uses herbs you probably already have in the pantry.
- Versatile – use what you have, skip what you don’t.
I’ve fallen in love with this homemade Italian seasoning recipe so much, that I now have it on hand at all times.
Plus it’s so easy to make, my kids can make it for me!
What is in Italian Seasoning?
Here’s what you need to make your own homemade Italian seasoning blend. Use dried:
- oregano
- basil
- rosemary
- thyme
- marjoram
- sage
If you can believe it, these six herbs combined are all you need for a delicious homemade Italian spice blend!
What’s a good substitute for Italian seasoning?
I think this recipe is a great substitute, but if you don’t have all the herbs listed, just make a blend using what you do have!
What is in McCormick Italian Seasoning?
McCormick calls for the same herbs, but they also add savory. I personally never have savory on hand, so I made up this blend without it!
Does Italian Seasoning Have Fennel?
No, and while some Italian seasoning blends also contain garlic, onion, and salt, mine doesn’t contain any of those. If you like those flavors, certainly add them to your mix!
How to Make Homemade Italian Seasoning
This spice mix couldn’t be simpler:
- Measure your herbs into a glass jar.
- Shake well.
- Use as directed in your favorite recipes!
Is Italian seasoning the same as Italian herbs?
No – Italian herbs make up Italian seasoning. They’re close, but not exactly the same.
Is Italian seasoning gluten-free?
Yes! There’s no gluten in these herbs, and nothing else added to this recipe.
How to use Italian Seasoning
I like to use Italian seasoning on roasted potatoes, but it’s really good on any roasted vegetable or even on rice or chicken!

The Italian Seasoning Mix is great! I really like the Taco Seasoning mix too, I use it all the time and makes leftover taco meat just as good as the first night! Five Stars for both.
