This recipe for Avocado Chocolate Mousse is dairy-free, refined sugar-free, paleo, keto and so good! It’s super easy to make, rich & decadent – the perfect healthy dessert! Serve with homemade whipped cream and raspberries!
How weird is it to say “avocado” and “chocolate” and “mousse” together in the same recipe name?
Worse yet, how bad is it that I’ve made this recipe twice in the past three days?
And if I truly had to confess that we just officially finished the Whole30 and are pretty much swearing off sugar… yet I’m eating this avocado chocolate mousse as I type… would you judge me?
I hope not, because this avocado chocolate mousse is BEYOND amazing. You need this in your life.
Before you think I’m nuts for telling you…
- whip up avocado and chocolate together, and
- you’ll never even notice that there’s avocado…
… trust me.
You will NEVER NEVER NEVER notice that there’s avocado in this smooth and creamy avocado chocolate mousse.
For real y’all – I have two avocado-haters in my family and they both doubted me. Then they both took a bite and sat there, mouths dropped because they really truly couldn’t taste the avocado.
Then they both promptly asked for more.
If you need to call this healthy chocolate mousse because you have avocado-haters too, I’m cool with that. But whatever you do, do NOT pass up this healthy dessert because you don’t think your family will like it. Because this recipe is a slam dunk!
Avocado Chocolate Mousse (a.k.a. Chocomole)
I know I’m not the original creator of avocado chocolate mousse and my version is inspired by this one. But I LOVE having a dessert option that is:
- Naturally sweetened /refined sugar free (just 2 Tbsp maple syrup per serving!)
- Gluten-free and dairy-free
- Paleo (our current eating habits after finishing the Whole30)
- Keto friendly
- Full of healthy fat (yay avocado!)
- In small single servings rather than large cakes and such
And I love it so much, I can’t help but share with you!
What are the ingredients for avocado chocolate mousse?
Avocado
I used three ripe avocados. You don’t want overly ripe avocados (the brown kind) or the under-ripe avocados (the yellow kind). If your avocado is just a smidge brown – as in 5-10% brown – that’s fine. But we definitely want a “lots more green than brown” scenario going on here.
How to tell if an avocado is ripe?
There’s probably a million different ways to know if an avocado is ripe. I use the color and squeeze test.
The color and squeeze test consists of looking for dark green avocados that give just a little when you squeeze it gently. This method gives me avocados that are ready to be eaten AND will last 1-2 days on the counter. If I need them to last longer, I pick lighter green and no give when I squeeze.
Cocoa Powder
I used Dutch cocoa powder (which is unsweetened cocoa powder) in this recipe, which tends to be darker than regular cocoa powder. Use whatever you have on hand because it won’t matter much in this recipe since you’re not baking with it. However, when I run out of cocoa powder, I’m going to give this cacao powder a try!
Maple Syrup
I’m a huge fan of using maple syrup in recipes that need a little sweetening, but when you don’t want to taste it. Alternatively, honey would work in a pinch (like it does in black bean brownies), but I can always taste honey in my recipes. Unless it’s supposed to taste like honey, I don’t want it to.
Dark Chocolate Chips
I used organic dark chocolate chips or you can always use a dark chocolate bar. No matter which route you go – bar chocolate or chocolate chips – you want to get good dark chocolate and you want to use a scale.
If you don’t have dark chocolate, you probably can use semi-sweet or milk chocolate in a pinch. I haven’t tested this myself, but if you do, I’d reduce the amount of maple syrup to keep the level of sweetness down. If you do decide to reduce the maple syrup, keep the almond milk handy in case you need to add more liquid to get the food processor or blender going.
How to make avocado chocolate mousse from scratch?
- In a food processor or blender (this is the blender I have), combine all the ingredients except the dark chocolate.
- In a small bowl, melt the chocolate. Stir well.
- Add the melted chocolate to the other ingredients and process or blend on high.
- Divide the mousse evenly between 8 small glass jars or small bowls. You can enjoy right away, or chill for an hour. Top with your choice of fresh fruit!
How long can I keep avocado chocolate mousse in the fridge?
Avocado chocolate pudding can be made a couple days ahead of time without a problem. It hasn’t lasted longer than 2 days in our fridge simply because we keep eating it, but friends say that after 2 days the avocado starts tasting funny anyway, so let’s cap it at 2 days in advance, max.
What can I serve avocado chocolate mousse with?
I served this with fresh raspberries, but any fresh berry would be great. Even orange segments or shredded coconut or chopped peanuts would be good.
If you want to make a super decadent dessert, you can serve alongside a scoop of homemade vanilla bean ice cream, topped with a dollop of homemade whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings!
Tips for making this avocado chocolate mousse recipe. I used:
- A Twister Jar and my Blendtec blender to whip these up (here’s why you need a high powered blender).
- This Dutch cocoa powder, but I’m going to try this cacao powder when I run out.
- I also used this maple syrup (except I buy it at Costco) and dark chocolate chips, on clearance from my local Walmart.
- Weighing the chocolate is best, since not all chips are the same size, so this is the kitchen scale I use to do that.
- My grandma gave me dry herb jars, which are 4 oz each, so I used those and some other 4 oz glass canning jars that I already had in the kitchen for serving.

This recipe is delicious!! As an aside do you know that whenever I print off one of your recipes, the bottom part of the directions always gets cut off, and then I need to handwrite the last 1, 2, or 3 directions? It’s a nuisance !!

If you add banana, fresh or frozen you won’t need maple syrup. I don’t add choc chips eithe just lots of Dutch chocolate and a couple of tablespoons of hot water and avocado. It doesn’t keep very well though. Mainly because we eat it all to quickly.

I don’t understand how this is whole 30 compliant. Isn’t maple syrup off limits? I’m not trying to be a hater, I just really want to make this because I’m trying to do whole 30 with my five-year-old…
Tiffany
Hi Erin! I don’t believe I said this was Whole30 compliant because of the maple syrup. Did I mis-type that somewhere? Let me know and I’ll fix it!
Larissa
I came across this as being recommended on a post about doing whole 30 with kids. You listed many new recipes you had tried and this was on there. I got excited until I looked at the ingredients, however, I found many recipes on your site to try and will save this one for post Whole 30 😊 Thanks for sharing so many great recipes and insights!

Hello Larissa,
We’re so glad you enjoyed the recipes! Thank you for sharing.
GG
I also came to this through a link on your whole30 with kids page so if you made it compliant then please add the modification into your recipe 💗
Karen @ Team Crumbs
Hi GG,
I have removed that recipe from the Whole30 with kids post, as it is not compliant and I think it was listed on there by mistake. It’s more for after the Whole30. LOL. If we ever make an option for Whole 30, we will add the mod to the recipe. Sorry about that. 🙂

Do you know how many calories are in one serving?
Tiffany
I don’t Jordyn as we don’t count calories. You can use any online nutritional calculator if you’d like. 🙂

I will forever look at avocado dessert recipes. This looks amazing.

I make a very simple avocado mousse for adults who actually like the taste of avocados – Just mash up the flesh with some Greek yoghurt, or Mascarpone and add some honey, or maple syrup if preferr though honey is cheaper, at least here. That´s it, very easy and quite delicious.
Will try your chocolate one, perhaps when we have guests, but I think just the cocoa powder would suffice, otherwise it would be too rich.

I’m one of those avocado haters. I know they are good for me so I muddle through and eat them anyway. But,…YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!! Heck probably my whole month. And since your recipes are always spot on, (hello chocolate cake mix, chocolate hummus), I will be in chocolate heaven this weekend. Thanks, Tiffany happy weekend.
Tiffany
You’re very welcome JoAnn – welcome to the dark side! 😉
Bess
Just made – good !
Can you freeze ?
Tarynkay
Based on the 70% dark chocolate and maple syrup in my pantry, I came up with 17.85 grams off added sugar per serving. Just wanted to share my efforts in case anyone else was curious!
Tiffany
Thank you!
Robert
Can you store it in the fridge with no degradation in quality for any length of time (more than one hour)?
Tiffany
Yep! Ours lasted 2 days. Not sure if it can last longer – we always eat it up!

Three minutes for that beauty ? I’m in!
Tiffany
Do it!
