Make rich, delicious avocado chocolate mousse that’s refined sugar-free, dairy-free, and so so yummy! Mix avocado with chocolate and dig in!

How weird is it to say “avocado” and “chocolate” and “mousse” together in the same recipe name?
And how bad is it that I’ve made this recipe twice in the past three days?
Would you judge me?
I hope not, because this avocado chocolate mousse is BEYOND amazing. You need this in your life.
Before you think I’m nuts for telling you to mix avocado with chocolate… trust me.
You will NEVER NEVER NEVER notice that there’s avocado in this smooth and creamy avocado chocolate mousse.
For real, y’all – I have two avocado-haters in my family, and they both doubted me. Then they both took a bite and sat there, mouths dropped because they really truly couldn’t taste the avocado.
Then they both promptly asked for more.
If you need to call this just plain “chocolate mousse” because you have avocado-haters too, I’m cool with that. But whatever you do, do NOT pass up this healthy dessert because you don’t think your family will like it. Because this recipe is a slam dunk!
AVOCADO CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
I know I’m not the original creator of avocado chocolate mousse (or “chocomole” as it has been called), and my version is inspired by this one. But I LOVE having a decadent dessert option that is:
- Naturally sweetened/refined sugar-free. Just 2 Tablespoons of maple syrup per serving!
- Paleo. This was our style of eating for a while after finishing the Whole30, and while you may not eat this specific way, paleo recipes can be helpful for those with other food sensitivities because you know they work without having to make too many substitutions yourself!
- Gluten-free and dairy-free. Case in point – this recipe is already gluten and dairy free. We can even say this is a vegan chocolate mousse!
- Keto friendly. This isn’t fully keto, but it’s close!
- Full of healthy fat. Yay avocado! We love the good fats over here.
- In small single servings rather than one large treat, like cakes and such. That makes it easy to track your portions.
And I love it so much, I can’t help but share with you!

AVOCADO AND CHOCOLATE MOUSSE INGREDIENTS
You’re just 7 simple ingredients away from experiencing this amazing chocolate mousse!
- Ripe Avocados. You don’t want overly ripe brown avocados or underripe yellow avocados. Try to catch them in that “perfectly green” area for a more neutral flavour.
- Cocoa Powder. I use Dutch cocoa powder (unsweetened cocoa powder), which tends to be darker than regular cocoa powder. Cacao powder works too!
- Almond Milk. Use your favorite dairy-free milk. Almond milk is my preference, but full-fat coconut milk would make extra-rich chocolate avocado mousse! Keep it handy in case you need to add an extra splash to help your blender or food processor work properly.
- Maple Syrup. I’m a huge fan of using maple syrup in recipes that need a little sweetening, but when you don’t want to taste it (honey will work, but you’ll taste it in the finished avocado and chocolate mousse).
- Vanilla Extract. Vanilla tricks your brain into thinking things are sweeter than they actually are – perfect for a lightly sweetened dessert!
- Salt. Salt complements the sweet flavors and makes everything taste better.
- Dark Chocolate. I used organic dark chocolate chips, or you can always use a dark chocolate bar. You could probably use semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips in a pinch, but you may want to reduce the maple syrup to keep the overall sweetness in check. Use dairy-free chocolate chips to keep it vegan.
Since not all chocolate chips are the same size, weighing the chocolate is best. This is the kitchen scale I use to do that.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE USING AVOCADO
Follow these simple instructions to make chocolate mousse using avocado.
Step 1. In a food processor or high-speed blender, combine all the ingredients except the dark chocolate.

Step 2. In a small bowl, melt the chocolate to a smooth consistency. Stir well.
Step 3. Add the melted chocolate to the other ingredients and process or blend on high until a silky smooth texture.

Step 4. Divide the mousse evenly between 8 small glass jars or small bowls. You can enjoy right away, or chill for an hour.
Store the avocado chocolate mousse in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Either use jars with lids or place a layer of plastic wrap gently pressed onto the top of the mousse. After 2 days, the cocoa avocado mousse can start to taste off and lose it’s chocolate flavor, so try to eat it before then (that’s never been a problem at our house!).

SERVE AVOCADO MOUSSE WITH
I served avocado mousse with fresh raspberries, but you could try a variety of toppings with the healthy chocolate mousse.
- Sliced strawberries
- Blueberries
- Blackberries
- Any kind of fresh berries!
- Orange segments
- Shredded coconut
- Chopped peanuts
Top everything with a dollop of Homemade Whipped Cream (or Chocolate Whipped Cream if you’re feeling extra chocolatey) and dark chocolate shavings for an extra decadent treat!

MACRO FRIENDLY AVOCADO CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
Avocado chocolate mousse is a delicious way to get your healthy fats!
Fat is NOT the enemy!
But you want to remember 2 things:
1. Choose the right kind of fat. Avocado, butter, and olive oil are going to satiate you more than margarine and French fries.
2. Don’t go overboard. Healthy fats add great flavor! (Especially when paired with chocolate!) But you don’t need a large amount to enjoy the richness they add to your meals.
So, while you might be tempted to eat this entire batch of avocado chocolate mousse yourself (guilty!), this is a great recipe to share with your family.

AVOCADO AND COCOA MOUSSE FAQS
Is avocado and cocoa mousse actually good? Do you really not taste the avocado?
I promise, you can’t taste the avocado in this recipe! My two avocado haters will confirm this for you – it just tastes like chocolatey goodness with no strong avocado flavor.
Is chocolate mousse with avocados keto?
Not quite. The maple syrup in this recipe keeps it from being fully keto. You could try an alternate sweetener instead to make this a keto chocolate mousse.
How do you tell if an avocado is ripe?
There are probably a million different ways to know if an avocado is ripe. I use the color and squeeze test: look for dark green avocados that give just a little when you squeeze them gently. This method gives me avocados that are ready to be eaten AND will last 1-2 days on the counter.

Was wondering if stevia could be used instead of maple syrup. I have 2 diabetics & not wanting to use the maple syrup.
Hi Linda,
Yes, you can use stevia instead of maple syrup. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste.
This recipe is delicious!! As an aside do you know that whenever I print off one of your recipes, the bottom part of the directions always gets cut off, and then I need to handwrite the last 1, 2, or 3 directions? It’s a nuisance !!
If you add banana, fresh or frozen you won’t need maple syrup. I don’t add choc chips eithe just lots of Dutch chocolate and a couple of tablespoons of hot water and avocado. It doesn’t keep very well though. Mainly because we eat it all to quickly.
I don’t understand how this is whole 30 compliant. Isn’t maple syrup off limits? I’m not trying to be a hater, I just really want to make this because I’m trying to do whole 30 with my five-year-old…
Hi Erin! I don’t believe I said this was Whole30 compliant because of the maple syrup. Did I mis-type that somewhere? Let me know and I’ll fix it!
I came across this as being recommended on a post about doing whole 30 with kids. You listed many new recipes you had tried and this was on there. I got excited until I looked at the ingredients, however, I found many recipes on your site to try and will save this one for post Whole 30 😊 Thanks for sharing so many great recipes and insights!
Hello Larissa,
We’re so glad you enjoyed the recipes! Thank you for sharing.
I also came to this through a link on your whole30 with kids page so if you made it compliant then please add the modification into your recipe 💗
Hi GG,
I have removed that recipe from the Whole30 with kids post, as it is not compliant and I think it was listed on there by mistake. It’s more for after the Whole30. LOL. If we ever make an option for Whole 30, we will add the mod to the recipe. Sorry about that. 🙂
Do you know how many calories are in one serving?
I don’t Jordyn as we don’t count calories. You can use any online nutritional calculator if you’d like. 🙂
I will forever look at avocado dessert recipes. This looks amazing.
Thank you!
I make a very simple avocado mousse for adults who actually like the taste of avocados – Just mash up the flesh with some Greek yoghurt, or Mascarpone and add some honey, or maple syrup if preferr though honey is cheaper, at least here. That´s it, very easy and quite delicious.
Will try your chocolate one, perhaps when we have guests, but I think just the cocoa powder would suffice, otherwise it would be too rich.
. .
I’m one of those avocado haters. I know they are good for me so I muddle through and eat them anyway. But,…YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!! Heck probably my whole month. And since your recipes are always spot on, (hello chocolate cake mix, chocolate hummus), I will be in chocolate heaven this weekend. Thanks, Tiffany happy weekend.
You’re very welcome JoAnn – welcome to the dark side! 😉
Just made – good !
Can you freeze ?
Based on the 70% dark chocolate and maple syrup in my pantry, I came up with 17.85 grams off added sugar per serving. Just wanted to share my efforts in case anyone else was curious!
Thank you!
Can you store it in the fridge with no degradation in quality for any length of time (more than one hour)?
Yep! Ours lasted 2 days. Not sure if it can last longer – we always eat it up!
Three minutes for that beauty ? I’m in!
Do it!
