This easy-to-make Homemade Blackened Seasoning Recipe is perfect for chicken, fish, pork or vegetables! A spicy and savory blend made with pantry spices. Enjoy with our delicious Blackened Salmon and Easy Oven Roasted Broccoli!
Have you ever ordered something “blackened” at a restaurant and wondering how they achieved that awesome flavor?
I have, and for a long time I thought that going out to dinner was the only way I could get that spicy, blackened seasoning goodness.
Not anymore!
You can make homemade blackened seasoning using a few spices you probably already have in your pantry!
Blackened Seasoning
If you’ve never had blackened seasoning before, you’re in for a treat! It’s a delicious blend of spices that is:
- Spicy!
- Super easy to make
- Cheap!
- Made with typical pantry spices
- Perfect on fish, chicken or pork…
- … or vegetables!
And it’s totally unlike any other homemade spice blend you’ve made before.
As much as I love homemade Montreal steak seasoning and my homemade poultry seasoning, my homemade blackened seasoning is the blend I come to most often!
Blackened Seasoning Recipe Ingredients
As I mentioned, you probably already have the ingredients you need to make this seasoning!
- Smoked paprika (must be smoked!)
- Garlic powder
- Onions powder
- Thyme
- Pepper
- Cayenne
- Basil
- Oregano
- Salt (try THIS one from Ava Jane’s Kitchen and get your first bag for JUST A PENNY!)
At first glance, that might seem like a lot. BUT, this recipe has all spices that you probably have (maybe except for smoked paprika) so you can easily make this in bulk and have it ready to go in the spice cabinet!
How to Make Blackened Seasoning
Here’s the SUPER SIMPLE 1-2-3 method…
- Get all the spices out of the cabinet.
- Measure each spice into a 4 oz jar.
- Cover, shake the jar, and use liberally!
Blackened Chicken Seasoning, or Blackened Fish Seasoning
This seasoning blend is PERFECT on chicken or fish, but it’s also great on pork and vegetables. If I want my roasted potatoes to have some oomph and I’m not sure what to season them with, I use this blackened seasoning blend!
Is blackened healthy?
Yes! The seasoning blend itself is nothing but dried herbs. The cooking method is what makes something healthy or not, so as long as you’re grilling or using healthy fats to cook, your blackened food will be healthy!
What’s the difference between grilled and blackened?
As I just mentioned, GRILLED is a cooking method where blackened is a spice blend.
What’s the difference between Cajun and blackened?
Cajun spices are very similar, but they use cumin and regular paprika while blackened spices use thyme and basil. You can get my homemade Cajun spice blend here.
What is blackened seasoning made of?
You can see the actual recipe below, but smoked paprika and cayenne pepper are key!
What to serve blackened food with?
Blackened chicken or blackened salmon would pair perfectly with lemon butter asparagus or easy pan-seared broccoli. Blackened seasoning can also be sprinkled liberally on easy oven roasted broccoli or oven roasted potatoes.

Stephanie
We’ve used this on fish. REALLY like that. We’ve used this on roasted potatoes. That was really good too… but I use this MOST on lightly buttered POPCORN!!! Wow! You MUST try it! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.

That is amazing Stephanie! Thanks for sharing!

Ooh, I can’t wait to try your mix! We discovered blackened seasoning a couple years ago and it’s a favorite. We have found that, while blackened salmon is good, it really shines on swordfish and tuna! We love ours grilled.
