Last winter we spent a week with extended family in Outer Banks, NC.
It wasn’t until halfway through the trip that I realized that aside from my natural remedy travel kit, I had only packed three toiletry items. Just three!
This wasn’t on accident either – it’s was entirely intentional. My simple morning routine doesn’t need anything else!
There was shampoo, conditioner and body wash for sure. There was also a separate face wash for acne-prone skin, acne medicine and make-up remover too.
When you include the tools I used for all of this (like a loofah for body wash and cotton rounds for make-up remover), it felt like I was packing my entire bathroom!
That’s why I was so stunned in the middle of our trip in North Carolina. I had packed so little, but I still had everything I needed.
In fact, I had everything the WHOLE FAMILY needed too!
Here are the three items that make-up my simple morning routine.
My Simple Morning Routine
1. Goat Milk Soap
I’ve shared before how we wash our hair without shampoo, how I healed my acne without medicine and why we switched to goat milk soap in the first place, so the fact that I packed a bar of goat milk soap isn’t a shocker if you’ve been reading this blog for awhile.
What DID surprise me though, are the multiple uses I get out of the one single bar:
At home, we have bars of goat milk soap from Bend Soap Company all over the house for these purposes. But in the rental house on vacation, there was ZERO soap.
As it turned out, the one bar I packed was more than enough for every washing need for our family of four for the whole week.
And I still brought half the bar home (thanks to these tips on stretching a bar of soap).
People ask me all the time which scents are my favorite (since I have acne-prone and sensitive skin), and I really like anything in the mint family with eucalyptus spearmint being my top pick.
You can buy goat milk soap from Bend Soap Company here. As of this posting, they still have bulk soap scraps available. This is when you can get the same exact soap – just in imperfect sizes – for 50% off! Anytime they have these sales, I make it a point to check my stock of soap and place a big order – it’s really the best way to save on high quality and all natural soap!
2. Bentonite Clay
Most importantly though, I use bentonite clay as toothpaste when I run out of homemade toothpaste – and that’s exactly what happened right before our trip!
I normally buy bentonite clay in bulk (because it’s more affordable than buying several of the smaller containers) and make a few batches of toothpaste at a time. But this past winter was a lot busier than usual with creating my Grocery Budget Bootcamp e-course, so I never got around to making toothpaste before we left.
Fortunately, I can just grab a hydrated tube of facial mud and go!
Not only will it serve as toothpaste that’s safe for the whole family to use, but it also doubles in our first-aid kit for any of these 45 ways to use bentonite clay (and I can vouch personally that using mud on burns works WONDERS!).
3. Coconut Oil
It’s hard to believe that the “secret” ingredient in our favorite chocolate chip cookies is the same ingredient I use ON MY FACE in my simply morning routine, but it’s true!
I first started using coconut oil as a moisturizer in my homemade tinted moisturizer, but I got lazy (or busy?) and just started using plain coconut oil instead.
I keep a silicone squeezable tube filled with coconut oil in my bathroom and squeeze out a small amount to use on my face each morning.
The cool thing about packing this tube on a trip though, is that coconut oil doubles as a natural make-up remover too!
My Husband’s Simple Morning Routine
My whole family (kids included) use these three things in their morning routine too. The kids and husband don’t use the coconut oil quite as much as I do, but we all equally use the goat milk soap and bentonite clay.
My husband adds one more item to his overnight bag – lotion. Just like their soap, he’s fallen in love with Bend Soap Company’s lotion and he won’t leave home without it.
My Extended Simple Morning Routine
Goat milk soap, bentonite clay and coconut oil are the staples of my every day simple morning routine. Without fail, I use all of these items.
But there are two other items I use often enough that they deserve at least an honorable mention.
1. Natural Deodorant
Natural deodorant isn’t part of my every day routine because I try to skip deodorant if it’s not necessary. I’ll use coconut oil on days I’m working at home or when the temperatures are moderate. But if I’m going to church or working in the yard or going running, natural deodorant is a must.
I’ve tried out a few different types of natural deodorant and wrote a full and honest review of one of my favorites here.
2. Lip Butter
Growing up, my dad always kept lip balm in his pocket. Now that I’m grown up with kids of my own and I know that there’s all sorts of junk hidden in lip balm, I choose all natural lip balm and use it to heal my chapped lips naturally!
If it looks like I have a bathroom full of Bend Soap Company products, it’s because I do! I started using their soap a couple years ago, and as the company has grown and added new products to their store, I’ve tried them and fallen in love with them!
I know I COULD test out a bunch of different brands of various natural products, but why fix something that isn’t broken?
