When you’re working in the kitchen, there are a few basic rules.
#1. Don’t burn yourself.
#2. Don’t burn down the house.
#3. Don’t cut yourself.
#4. Don’t cut me.
#3. Don’t lick the bowl until you’re done.
Unfortunately, some of those rules are hard to follow with kids in the kitchen.
Recently the kids and I experimented with no bake apple oatmeal cookies. To some, the term “no-bake” means less to get wrong. For me, “no-bake” means easy because the kids do all the work!
And that is precisely the case with this recipe. I did one teensie little step and the kids did the rest.
They stirred.
They measured.
They scooped.
And as a reward for their efforts, they licked the bowl.
When they were done, of course.
No bake apple oatmeal cookies let you happily invite the kids into the kitchen, while you (try to) relax and watch them them enjoy making food. Stepping aside and letting the kids take over opens up an entire new avenue of conversations. You can teach them about measuring, about healthy ingredients and why you make food the way you do. And their little ears will listen attentively because they’re so content stirring or mashing or scooping.
The kids and I had fun developing this recipe. It’s filled with fresh, seasonal apples, hearty oats and super healthy coconut oil. How fun would it be to chop up apples you’ve just picked from an orchard?!
They’ll love getting their hands dirty, and you’ll love not having to worry about them cutting themselves or burning down the house. Fall is the season for baking cookies AND traditions. We’re starting a new one this year where the kids get to make a batch of cookies – all by themselves. Would you and your family like to join us? I promise, you will not be disappointed with this recipe!
Thank you for so many delicious recopies , i cannot wait to try the coffee blends!
