Ever since I got an air fryer, I’ve been experimenting with making some of my favorite foods in a new way.
I love using it to make a single serving of steak bites for my lunch.
I make crispy sliced potatoes all the time – they’re one of my favorite easy sides!
And now, I make crispy air fryer hash browns for the whole family!
AIR FRYER HASH BROWNS
Although it doesn’t necessarily save time, I love making air fryer hash browns for breakfast because they’re:
- Hands-off. Now that I’ve got the cooking time down, I can get the hash browns started and do something else while they cook.
- Minimal mess. No oil spatter here!
- Keeps the kitchen cool. I don’t have to heat up the oven to bake hash browns or mess with the stove.
- Super easy. Dump, spray, and cook!
- Vegan and gluten-free. You wouldn’t think I would need to mention this when we’re talking potatoes, but some brands of hash browns actually contain beef flavor!
- Crispy and delicious every time!

AIR-FRYER HASH BROWNS INGREDIENTS
You only need 3 simple ingredients to make air-fryer hash browns!
- Shredded Hash Brown Potatoes. I used Walmart Great Value brand frozen shredded hash browns. Look for a brand that contains only potatoes (and maybe oil and salt). You can also shred your own Yukon gold or russet potatoes with a box grater (pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture).
- Cooking Spray. To spray the air fryer tray and the potatoes for crispy goodness without a ton of extra fat. I use an olive oil spray.
- Salt. I stick with just salt for seasoning, but feel free to add a sprinkle of garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, or paprika if you like those flavors.
HOW TO MAKE HASH BROWNS AIR FRYER METHOD
To make hash browns air fryer style, follow these simple instructions.
Step 1. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place a thin layer of hash browns in an even layer in the basket (some overlap is okay).

Step 2. Spray the top of the potatoes with cooking spray.
Step 3. Air fry at 400F for 5 minutes. Check your hashbrowns and flip as best you can, then cook for another 5-8 minutes. Repeat until golden brown. My airfryer took about three rounds. Air fryers can vary in actual temp and cook time.

Err on the low side because they can go from light brown to dark brown REALLY quick.
Step 4. Sprinkle with salt just before serving.

Store crispy hash browns leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat them in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes to crisp them back up!
AIR FRYER. HASH BROWNS TIPS
Air-fryer hash browns are super simple to make, but there are a few things to keep in mind for them to turn out well.
- Cook multiple batches rather than a thick layer. If you overload the air fryer, the middle won’t cook properly, and you’ll end up with a half frozen, half burnt mixture.
- How much you can make at one time will depend on the size of your air fryer, but the method stays the same.
- Frozen hash browns work just fine! That’s what I typically use.
- Add onions for more flavor! Finely dice half an onion and toss it with the shredded potatoes before spraying and cooking.
