Let me start today’s post off with a big, fat disclaimer:
I am not an expert in essential oils, and based on how busy my days are lately, I doubt I will be one anytime soon.
I hope to change that a little bit next year (which is just two months away?!) with the essential oils course that came in the last Ultimate Bundle. Until then, I’m just the average mom trying to decipher essential oil truth from the rumor riff-raff. I figure you guys can relate to this, yes?
I’ve been using essential oils for about a year now. First, it was in homemade clay toothpaste (our knock-off version of Earthpaste), then homemade tinted moisturizer and finally in homemade powdered foundation. Granted, these are rather small things when you consider all the health benefits that essential oils could provide, but still, I’m using them nonetheless.
And so far, so good! They’re keeping me out out of the dog house with the dentist and helping to keep my acne-prone skin clear (more on that here).
To be honest, essential oils feels like one big scary experiment to me. I’ve heard rave success stories from some, and disappointing stories from other.
Try this brand, but avoid that one. Eat it, don’t eat it. Dilute it, apply it neat (undiluted). This certified label is false, but this one is true.
Oh my goodness, for crying out loud. All this mess just makes me want to ignore essential oils altogether… BUT, but it’s really hard to do that when the proof is in the pudding… And I’ve got some REALLY great pudding!
You see, a couple weeks ago Mr. Crumbs and I were cleaning out the closets. Couple this with a bit of change in weather and my allergies were going crazy! I’m absolutely not kidding you when I say I was sneezing 20-30 times a day. In fact, that’s probably a bit underestimating.
All this sneezing led to a runny nose… which led to congestion and my eyes were non-stop watering like fountains. It was only allergies, but after it progressively getting worse after a couple days, I was downright miserable. I also had this gut feeling that if I didn’t do something about it ASAP, these minor allergies could easily turn into a cold.
Raise your hand if you want to catch a cold….
Yeah. Me neither.
I shared my allergy struggles with the Crumbs Facebook community and you guys suggested a simple combination of three essential oils and water. I tried the combination, and in the time it took to diffuse this concoction, it worked!
Now, this does come with a slight warning. First, this natural remedy for allergies smells strange.
Second, you’ll notice near-immediate relief. I diffused and within minutes, the sneezing had stopped and my eyes had cleared up.
Third (and this is the best part), this natural remedy for allergies lasted SIX HOURS!
I couldn’t believe that a few drops of essential oils could really provide such immediate, and long lasting allergy relief, but it’s true!
I tested this on a Friday night around 8pm and was fine through the night. The next morning, I started sneezing again. I repeated the remedy and BAM. Symptoms gone until noon! Actually, the symptoms were so much more manageable that I didn’t need to repeat this again.
Two diffused doses of this natural remedy made my severe allergies disappear, while I know it would have taken DAYS worth of over-the-counter medicine to do the same.
See? I told you I had some good pudding.
- Fill diffuser with water, add essential oils. Diffus mixture for allergy relief!
Now I know many of you are more educated in essential oils than I am. But remember – I’m not claiming to be an expert. There’s a huge learning curve when it comes to this stuff, and there’s no way it can all be figured out overnight. However, here’s what I do know:
Quality of Essential Oils Matters
There is no government body or organization that approves or certifies essential oil quality. That means that grading systems such as A, B, C or Therapeutic grade are created and regulated by the company. Ignore any claims to “this awesome certification” and dig a little deeper.
Look at the mission statement of the company. Read about their values. You want an honest company and 100% pure essential oils. Nothing else.
Essential Oils are Very Potent
Essential oils are the naturally occurring oils in plants. They’re obtained by either cold pressing (usually for citrus) or steam distillation (most other oils). The best oils will be undiluted and not manipulated with solvents or additives. Because they’re unadulterated, they’re highly concentrated. One drop can go a long way, and in most cases, essential oils should be diluted.
Start with Just Four Basic Essential Oils
There are more different types of essential oils than I could ever possibly count, but you can accomplish a lot with these four basic essential oils: lemon, melaleuca (tea tree), peppermint and lavender. These four essential oils are capable of providing relief for over 20 different common ailments like headaches, toothaches, insomnia, and acne. For specifics, check out these great info-graphics for lemon, peppermint and lavender essential oils by Rachel.
Plus, they’re the most commonly used essential oils when you’re starting to make your own products like:
Plus, when you’re working within a small budget, you certainly don’t want to spend money on things you won’t use often. Or worse, things you don’t need.
Do you use these essential oils? What types of home remedies do you use them for?
